The nights are long, but the years are oh so short.
Hey Friends, just popping in for a quick update on our Coffee Bar!
Letting it dry overnight and then I just have to get a piece of white MDF backboard to create a little shelf where one of the old drawers went (the top right drawer) and spray paint the hardware matte black. Once that’s all done, I can attach the hardware and take the desk upstairs!
I also need to spray the shelf brackets I got with the matte black spray paint. They are glossy black and I’d really like it all to match. Then I can cut my shelf to size, stain that and install it. Boom, coffee bar DIY is nearly complete!
Stay tuned for updates on this awesome-fun DIY!
Christmas has come & gone for another year. This always makes me sad; it means new years is soon and another year comes to a close.
It was our little man’s first festive season & the hubby and I were super excited. We didn’t want to set up crazy expectations for future Christmases, so we gifted more useful items – food pouches, soothers & soother straps, a touque because it’s super cold here, and the like. Of course there was a toy or two from us, but extended family definitely spoiled him in that department.
Little man got a good few developmental toys – alphabets, shape blocks, a toy to promote crawling. My parents surprised both their grandbabies (my niece & my son) with a sled each! Hubby has already added straps and a buckle, and we took little man for a stroll down the street & back. It was quite blustery that day, so we didn’t stay out too long.
I mentioned on my last post that U waa hoping to have enough time to make mommy & me matching outfits. I’m happy to announce that i finished them just in time. I didn’t get a great photo, but I did snap this on my phone:
I used the Alleycat Romper pattern from Lil&Luxe for Kasper’s duds and I used the SFR pattern from Patterns for Pirates for my shirt.
I can see many more of each in my sewing future! Stick around for more photos and sewing projects!
I’ve taken up another new hobby while off on mat-leave. It always seems like my breaks from work, whether long (mat leave) or short (recovery from surgery), include a craft or hobby. Often these creative ventures are new to me:
I have sewn before, so its not entirely new, BUT that was a lifetime ago. Back when I was in elementary school and high school my mum was BIG into sewing. She created hallowe’en costumes, practice skating outfits, graduation dresses (I of course picked a big poofy ballgown for my grade 8 grad), and formal wear. Mum has made herself gowns for work Christmas parties and conveniently we were the same size back then so I got to wear the dresses too.
Since being on maternity leave, I’ve been on social media more often (downtime when little is napping, early days when I was pumping after every nursing session, etc). I became hella inspired by loads of awesome baby gear made by stay at home mums and full time working mums alike. I thought to myself “what the heck, can’t be that hard!”
Where have we heard this before??
I had a gift card to Walmart and spent a portion of it on a Brother brand sewing machine. Mum helped me pick out a decent machine – it can monogram, do buttons, and quilt. I probably will never use all of its features, but they’re there if I get super crazy 😉
Not long after that I found a few facebook groups (interested? google “patterns for pirates” and “made for mermaids” – no affiliation, but their patterns are ballin’). I ordered some knit fabric from a place not terribly far from my city and got to work. There was much cursing. Then my mum gifted me her old serger! Things improved quickly after that. I took the serger to get serviced because it needed to be cleaned up and adjusted – conveniently there is a place maybe 5min from my house. I’ve since made a few pairs of harem style pants for my boy and my friend’s kiddo. I’ve made my sister and her daughter matching dresses too.
I just finished a new pair of tights that look like they’ve got leg warmers at the bottom. They’re super comfy!
I’ve got plans to make myself and Kasper semi-matching Christmas duds out of that gorgeous red and black plaid I’ve seen everywhere. I’m going to make a dress with black sleeves for myself and I’ll make a fun bubble romper for him. Its going really well and I hope to keep it up so that i keep improving and learning new tricks. I will definitely be including more sewing updates on the blog so make sure to check back here!
Hello Darlings! As promised from my last post, I have a basement update for you (because thats apparently all we’re doing these days). BUT I also have a great and exciting tidbit to share as well… so hang on to your hats.
Hello Again – as promised from that last brief post, I have a proper basement renovation update for you all!
Occasionally I feel the need to bake for the festive season. Not for any one person in particular, but it’s fun to bring treats to various gatherings. Continue reading Christmas Cookies
For anyone who has been reading the last few posts here on The Mellow Beat, you may have noticed that I’ve been hinting at some new and exciting changes. For one thing, we are tackling our unfinished basement this winter season. Nothing too extreme there as we aren’t planning on installing flooring or a ceiling for a while. Just the walls and some built-in bookcases/mantel for a future wall mounted fireplace. We are also moving our office furniture into the basement once it is ready to go.
The reason for the sudden desire to relocate our office and finish up the basement (minus the need for plugs and a place to edit photos), is that we are converting our current office into room…
A nursery room…
For our future little mister or miss!!
That’s right friends, the Bagels are multiplying!
Our little bundle of awesome is due in the spring and as such we have the winter months available to complete any renovations and convert the office. I’m planning on an enchanted forest themed nursery room – obviously I originally planned on a Harry Potter inspired room, but thought it could too easily get over cluttered and busy. This way I still get a hint of magic, but a more clean and simple overall feel.
I’m slowly researching a few baby related things:
On top of all of that I have to travel quite a distance for all of my pregnancy appointments because of the ol ticker. I will be taken care of a high risk special pregnancies program – so far they’ve been amazing! A lot of my appointments have been scheduled for the same day even though I’m in three places/ hospitals. We only have to drive up for that one day to take care of 3 different appointments and see 2 doctors. Fantastic. And so far, from how I feel, the ol ticker is doing well!
I think we plan on making one big purchase each month until the little nugget arrives (crib, glider, etc). I did find a great deal on the stroller/car seat combo we liked and purchased that earlier this week. So that’s one big thing down! I don’t think we will purchase a change table, but we will be refinishing a dresser and building a base for it to bring it up to change table height. This way we save a good chunk of change and I can just pick up a change table top (the foam thing) and a few covers to stick on the top of the dresser. Perfect!
Not that I’m expecting comments or anything, but if you have kiddos what are some of the items you couldn’t imagine living without? Items you thought you needed, but turns out you didn’t really use them much? And if you cloth diaper, what is your favourite kind? (I’m looking into hybrid fitteds).
On that super fun note, stick around for fun house reno and baby updates!
Otherwise known as my ABSOLUTE FAVOURITE time of the year! Though, if we’re being honest, I love pretty much every holiday
(i’m aware Hallowe’en isn’t technically a holiday… but it should be!).
